Nature-Based Therapy is an experiential therapeutic approach that incorporates the inter-relationship between humans and the more-than-human natural world into the work of healing, growth, and development. It sees human beings as part of a wider, interconnected ecosystem — nature is regarded as an undeniable part of us, just as much as we are part of it. The therapeutic alliance between client, counsellor, and nature as co-therapist is at the core of this approach.

Sessions happen in the nearby outdoors — a neighbourhood park, riverside walking path, lake, or forested area. You and I will always discuss beforehand where best to meet. I offer the choice to incorporate mindfulness-based and somatic (embodied) practices into each session, from mindful movement to practicing mindfulness of the five senses in nature. I also incorporate experiential and expressive activities, like creative arts or mirroring nature movement exercises, to help process emotions and experiences that can be hard to access with words alone. We may gently stroll, pause, or sit, depending on how you're feeling and where the session takes us.
Sessions occur rain or shine, with exceptions for weather warnings such as rainfall, strong wind, heat, or snowstorm warnings, for safety. I'll always let you know at least 24 hours ahead of any weather-related cancellations, and we'll rebook for a later date.

I offer sessions at several transit-accessible nature locations in Vancouver and Burnaby, including Riverfront Park, Central Park (Burnaby), Trout Lake Park, and Jonathan Rogers Park. Most locations have wheelchair-accessible paths and washrooms — we'll choose the location that works best for you together.

Mindfulness comes from the ancient Pāli word sati, meaning "remembering" — not recalling the past, but a deeper remembering of our interconnectedness and a returning to the fullness of the present moment. In counselling, mindfulness helps you slow down, notice what's happening inside, and cultivate a more grounded, accepting relationship with your thoughts and emotions. Over time, this allows greater clarity, calm, and resilience to emerge naturally. I draw on evidence-based approaches such as Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) as part of this work.
